Keep Auto Exhausts Clean with Service from Brake Works

Auto exhausts are cleaner than ever before, thanks to modern environmental components that filter contaminants out from combustion byproducts.  Like all mechanical systems, however, over time, exhaust systems develop problems that require servicing.  Here are some ways you can check for trouble with your own vehicle:

1. Give the entire system a good visual inspection.  Starting at the engine and moving back to the tailpipe, look for fissures, holes, or cracks.  Pay special attention to where the exhaust manifold and cylinder connect, as well as where the manifold attaches to the main pipe.

2. Start the vehicle and listen to it running.  If you hear a hiss or popping noise, then you probably have a leaking muffler or pipes.

3. If you can’t inspect the entire exhaust system safely, then at least give the muffler a good look-see.  It should be shiny and solid.  If you see punctures, holes, or rusted areas, then you’ve got problems.

4. Sometimes, rust or corrosion may be inside the muffler or pipes without being visible on the exterior.  To check for this, press on these components with either the tip of a screwdriver or a pair of pliers.  If the surface gives, then the part has interior rust that requires immediate servicing.

5. If you have the tools and skills to do so safely, then remove the catalytic converter and hold it up to a strong light.  If the light doesn’t shine through it, then the converter is clogged and should be replaced as soon as possible.

While you can diagnose some problems with auto exhausts on your own, don’t try repairing them yourself.  Bring your vehicle into Brake Works instead.  Our trained technicians have the tools and know-how the fix the issue quickly and safely, getting you back on the road in no time at all.  Come see us today if we can help.
